Take that mental health day
As our society continues to progress with the acceptance of mental health services, it’s encouraging to see some employers begin to offer Mental Health Days. Who would’ve thought that a day to rejuvenate could be a valid reason to take off work so many years ago? The challenge I see is that many of my clients or close friends are hesitant to utilize those days throughout the year and to take it one step further won’t even take the designated sick days provided. It’s important to remember that these days are provided for a reason, whether you are physically sick or need some emotional space from work. Here are some steps to help you reflect on the challenging part of asking your boss for the day off.
1. Identify personal judgments
Are you framing the idea of taking a day off as “lazy” in your head? Or maybe you’re saying “Just push through, it’s not that big of a deal.” When we begin to evaluate scenarios or decisions instead of seeing them as nonjudgmental, our thoughts can be a barrier to us taking the action that we may need to preserve our health. Try to reframe those thoughts such as “I’ve been plugging away for months without a day, it could be nice to have some extra rest” or “Yesterday was a pretty intense situation I had to manage, let me plan for a day off later this week to have some space.”
2. Reflect
Look back and take inventory of when you utilized a day off just for personal benefit. Our society rewards those who work hard and at times can penalize or place judgment on those who opt for balanced living. Keep in mind the facts when making your decision, including the situation that might be prompting you for some time away from work.
3. Prioritize your values
Values are a core component of who we are and how we want to live our lives. Be mindful of what yours are and whether or not that includes work. If it doesn’t, identify what needs to be reprioritized to reflect what importance it is in your life. When one area is overly successful or is placed high on a pedestal, it typically means that another area is lacking or not getting attention. Balance is 🔑
Wishing you comfort and renewed energy on your next day off!
